Isabella <\/u><\/strong>Tugman<\/u><\/strong> deplores: \u275dIt’s<\/em> embarrassing<\/em> how<\/em> many<\/em> female<\/em> roles<\/em> are<\/em> based<\/em> entirely<\/em> on<\/em> physical<\/em> description<\/em> without<\/em> even<\/em> a<\/em> thought<\/em> to<\/em> who<\/em> she<\/em> is<\/em> as<\/em> a<\/em> person.<\/em>\u275e<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Isabella nails it again: \u275d
Giving<\/em> little<\/em> character<\/em> description<\/em> aside<\/em> from<\/em> physical<\/em> attributes<\/em> is<\/em> lazy<\/em> writing<\/em> and<\/em> leaves<\/em> a<\/em> shallow,<\/em> undeveloped<\/em> character<\/em>.\u275e<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Women<\/em> experience<\/em> the<\/em> full<\/em> spectrum<\/em> of<\/em> emotions<\/em> and<\/em> elements<\/em> of<\/em> human<\/em> suffering,<\/em> just<\/em> as<\/em> men<\/em> do.<\/em> Women<\/em> are<\/em> human<\/em> and<\/em> make<\/em> mistakes,<\/em> they<\/em> aren’t<\/em> always<\/em> pure<\/em> and<\/em> virtuous,<\/em> nor<\/em> are<\/em> they<\/em> 100%<\/em> evil<\/em> villain<\/em> either.\u275e<\/em> says Isabella<\/u><\/strong> Tugman<\/u><\/strong>.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
These are words writers need to have in the forefront of their minds when they write women in order to get women right. It’s about creating characters with more range, more subtlety. Isabella sounds the call:\u275d
I<\/em> want<\/em> writers<\/em> to<\/em> tune<\/em> into<\/em> these<\/em> nuances<\/em> within<\/em> female<\/em> characters<\/em>.\u275e<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I’d like to give the final word to actress, singer and producer Isabella<\/strong><\/u> Tugman<\/strong><\/u> who covers many of the points raised in this article: <\/span><\/p>\n \u275dMen get more roles, more dialogue, more character variances, and more diverse representation<\/em><\/strong>. <\/em>In the real world, women have just as varied a spectrum of characteristics and experiences as men, yet female portrayal in film has been far more limited. I find it insightful to think of a distinctive male role, like that of the brilliant autistic man portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in \u201cRain Man\u201d, and attempt to recall a similar female role in a film, if there\u2019s ever been one<\/em>. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/p>\n
